Understanding Additional Learning Needs (ALN)
What Are Additional Learning Needs?
Additional Learning Needs (ALN) refers to the requirements of children who need extra or specific support to engage effectively with their education due to learning difficulties, disabilities, or other challenges. ALN support aims to ensure these children have access to the same educational opportunities as their peers.
Identifying ALN:
If you suspect your child has ALN, you should discuss your concerns with your child’s teacher or the school’s ALN coordinator.
The ALN Assessment Process
Step 1: Initial Concerns
Step 2: Professional Evaluation
Step 3: Decision Making
Individual Development Plan (IDP)
What is an IDP?
An Individual Development Plan (IDP) is a detailed document that outlines the specific educational requirements and the support a child with ALN will receive. The IDP is developed collaboratively by teachers, ALN professionals, parents, and sometimes the child themselves.
Creating an IDP
The process involves assessing the child’s unique needs, setting specific, measurable goals, and detailing the support and resources that will be provided to achieve these goals.
Benefits of an IDP
A well-structured IDP ensures that every child with ALN receives personalized support tailored to their specific educational needs. It serves as a roadmap for teachers and caregivers, guiding them in effectively supporting the child’s learning journey.
Navigating Local Authority Procedures
Working with Your Local Authority
In Wales, local authorities play a significant role in the management and provision of ALN support. If your child is identified as having ALN, you will work closely with your local authority to secure an IDP.
Key Contacts
Each local authority has an ALN department. Parents are encouraged to contact this department for guidance and support throughout the assessment and IDP development process.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What should I do if I think my child has ALN?
Speak to your child’s teacher or school’s ALN coordinator. They can guide you through the process of assessment and any necessary steps.
How long does it take to get an IDP?
The time can vary based on individual circumstances and local authority procedures. Typically, it might take a few months from the initial assessment to the finalization of an IDP.
Can I appeal the decisions made regarding my child’s ALN status or IDP?
Yes, parents have the right to appeal decisions through the local education tribunal if they disagree with the assessment outcomes or the provisions of an IDP.
